Job Description

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the field of galaxy evolution at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Ghent University. Candidates with the following observational and/or theoretical expertise are encouraged to apply: stellar population synthesis models, kinematics/dynamical modeling, abundance matching techniques, and cosmological hydrodynamical simulations.  The successful candidate will work with Prof. Arjen van der Wel in the context of LEGA-C, a project built around a >100 night Public Spectroscopic Survey with VLT/VIMOS, the core dataset of which consists of high-S/N stellar continuum spectra of thousands of z~1 galaxies with the goal to examine the physics of galaxy evolution in a cosmological context. Generous support for travel, funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant, will allow the succesful candidate to partake in the international LEGA-C collaboration and attend conferences.

Ghent University is an international, highly rated university with more than 40,000 students. The astronomy group's expanding research interests include nearby galaxies, infrared astronomy, hydrodynamical simulations/radiative transfer, galaxy formation and evolution, high-redshift observations and observational cosmology.

Informal inquires are welcome ([email protected]) and applications sent before January 15th will be fully considered. The candidates should arrange for three reference letters to be sent by the same date and to the same e-mail address. The starting date can be as early as May 1st 2018 and should be no later than October 1st 2018. The position is initially for 2 years, and renewable for 1 year.
