SUBARU NIGHT OPERATION ASSISTANT – ID# 222150

National Astronomical Observatory of Japan.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), located in Maunakea & Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,810.00/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Assists Observations Sys Assoc (OSA) during nighttime oper by starting/shutting down telescope & taking calib data for instruments by following an estab procedure, monitoring safety/health of personnel at the summit, checking system & weather periodically, recording  in online log & operating sys from console or control panel under oversight of OSA. Assists OSA to take remedial actions & rept them & in nighttime security/safety of fac. When OSA is not on duty, Night Oper Asst (NOA) takes over OSA’s role. Assists w/transporting observers to/from summit. Participates in reg team mtgs, trngs, occas maint/svcs, acquisition of telescope/instr data, coord of first responses to night time trouble repts, doc of manuals/rpts.  Participates in repair/upgrade of telescope sys components. Typical rotation sched is 5 consecutive full-nights of summit duties followed by 6 or 7 days off. Actual sched depends on  operational needs & is a mix of full-night & daytime duties.

PRIM QUALS: EDUC/TRNG:  Bachelor’s Deg from accred four (4) year coll or univ w/an emphasis in Astron, Sci or technical field.  EXPER:  Up to one (0-1) year of exper in astron, sci, eng or tech fields. At least one (1) year of driving exper.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowl of basic astron concepts, stnd word processing & spreadsheet software. Abil to oper lg-scale precision mech sys, elec sys or electronics w/high complexity. Abil to startup/shutdown telescope. Abil to effectively interact/communicate through elec mail & in person. Must possess a valid driver’s lic (& if use of pers veh on job is req, must also have valid personal driver’s insur equiv to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insur) & maintain throughout duration of employ. Must be able to drive 4WD w/manual trans. Post Offer/Emp Cond: Must possess Cert in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain cert following trng provided w/in 12 mon from date of hire) & maintain throughout duration of empl. Must possess Cert in Emer Med Response for Adult First Aid, emer oxygen admin & Auto Ext Defib (AED) usage (or be able to obtain certificate following trng provided w/in 12 mon from date of hire) & maintain throughout duration of employ. PHYS/MED REQ:  Must be able to sleep at high alt (Hale Pohaku: 9,000 ft) & lift/carry 30 lbs of equip unassisted. Able to climb ladders, crawl into narrow spaces & work in narrow areas. Post Offer/Empl Cond: Must be able to work at 14,000 ft & pass a post offer high-alt medical exam. SEC QUALS:  Prior exper/trng in optics, electronics, electrical, or mech sys. Exper in astron observation, oper of telescope in college course from accredited college or univ. Bilingual capability in Eng & Japanese.
