Hot Environments Laboratory Associate

Applications are now being accepted for a lab technician in the Hot Environments Lab as a part of the Astrochemistry Laboratory at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. This position will support cutting-edge research into the spectral changes of planetary analogs under hot environmental conditions. The position consists of an appointment in the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s (UMBC) Center for Space Sciences and Technology (CSST), funded by NASA through the Center for Research and Exploration in Space Science and Technology II (CRESST II).

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with infrared spectroscopy techniques across a wide range of environmental conditions (pressure, temperature, chemical, etc.). Applicants should have experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometers (FTIRs) gas instrumentation, as well as method development and spectral analysis. Mass spectrometry experience is also highly desirable. Position responsibilities include the following: operation and routine maintenance of a variety of FTIR instrument suites, including two multivariable FTIR cells; sample preparation and analysis of compounds across multiple environments; method development for IR analyses; processing and analyzing IR data; batching, scripting, and automating laboratory experiments; and additional laboratory tasks.

This position will also support ongoing research and analysis projects in the lab, including development of simulation of multi-high temperature environments and laboratory measurements of high temperature gas-solid species. Projects could include applications to exoplanet missions like JWST and the DAVINCI mission to Venus.

A bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physics, or a closely related field is required. A master’s degree in a related field is desirable. Good communication and laboratory documentation skills are required, as well as the ability to handle multiple projects at once.

The initial funding for this position will be for 1 year, with possible extension pending performance and funding. Applicants must be able to start on-site at NASA/GSFC in Summer 2022. All faculty and staff who are employed with CRESST II at NASA/GSFC are required to be vaccinated against COVID. Proof of full vaccination will be required before the start of employment.
