Job Announcement Text:

High Point University in High Point, NC, seeks a full-time Planetarium & Physics Laboratory Manager for the Department of Physics in the Wanek School of Natural Sciences. The Culp Planetarium is a state-of-the-art Spitz SciDome system with a 50-ft dome and 125 seats. First and foremost, the facility will serve as an engaging classroom environment for HPU undergraduate courses in astronomy, biology, environmental science, and earth science. A distinctive public outreach program is currently under development, with plans for monthly public shows and occasional K-12 field trip visits. Additionally, the Wanek School of Natural Sciences will house several instructional spaces for introductory and advanced physics & astronomy classes and labs.

The new Planetarium & Physics Laboratory Manager, who will report to the Physics Department Chair and work closely with and assist the Planetarium Director, will play a leading role in the operations of the Culp Planetarium and will provide support for our undergraduate physics laboratories. During the academic semesters, they will devote approximately 80% of their time to the planetarium and 20% of their time to laboratory support; these may be adjusted to 60% and 40%, respectively, during summers, in order to permit the construction of demonstration equipment. This is a full-time, 12-month staff position. Normal hours of work will frequently deviate from the standard 8:30am to 5:00pm, M-F workweek. Flexibility during evenings and weekends will be mandatory in order to meet the planetarium scheduling needs of the department, school, and university.

The B.S. Physics program at High Point University was started in August 2010 with a focus on engaging and effective teaching, computational physics, and undergraduate research (http://www.highpoint.edu/physics/). The program seeks a dynamic individual who is passionate about inspiring the next generation of scientists in creative and meaningful ways. The successful applicant will have access to office space in the Wanek School of Natural Sciences, a new undergraduate science building scheduled to open in August 2019.
