The IAC (Tenerife, Spain) invites applications for ONE Postdoctoral contract to work on numerical simulations associated to the research line “Formation and Evolution of Galaxies”. This contract is financed by the "SEVERO OCHOA PROGRAM" (SEV-2015-0548), supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. It follows the selection of the IAC as a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence by the Spanish Government in 2015, a prestigious recognition awarded for the second time to the IAC as a leading research institute in Spain.
Research topics at the IAC include most areas of astrophysics: solar physics, planetary systems, stellar and interstellar physics, galactic formation and evolution, and cosmology and astroparticles. These research lines are supported by an ambitious instrumentation program. Further information about the IAC's research programme, its Observatories and the 10.4m GTC is available at the IAC's web page (http://www.iac.es/).
Duties: The selected candidate will carry out theoretical and numerical research on the formation and evolution of galaxies with particular focus on the properties of the present day galaxy population. She/he will have access to data from state-of-the-art numerical, cosmological simulations, as well as detailed observations carried out by IAC researchers. The postdoc will join the newly established galaxy formation and evolution theory group, led by dr Claudio Dalla Vecchia, with close ties to the observers at IAC. The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to interact with an extensive network of international collaborators.
Expertise in the following topics will be highly valued:
• Knowledge of programming languages and numerical codes
• Experience in the analysis of simulation data
• Knowledge of the physics of formation and evolution of galaxies
• Publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals
The following will also be considered:
• Scientific or technical contributions in the current field of research of the applicant
• Participation in international conferences
• Experience in different scientific institutions
Position requirements: The candidates must have a solid track record of research and are expected to have a strong publication record in the field of formation and evolution of galaxies.
To be eligible for admission, applicants must have obtained a Ph.D. degree in Astrophysics or Physics, within the application deadline
Duration: The duration of the contract will be of 2 years. The starting date is expected to be no later than January 1, 2018.
