Postdoctoral Scholar in Physics
Job Summary
Job Description
The experimental cosmology group at Caltech (http://cosmology.caltech.edu/) is offering a postdoctoral position in Cosmic Microwave Background studies. The group, led by Professor Jamie Bock, is currently developing the BICEP Array experiment, a series of 4 microwave telescopes optimized for sensitive measurements of degree-scale polarization, aimed at the detection of B-mode polarization signal from inflationary gravitational waves. The qualified applicant will participate in the analysis of current data from multiple receiver-year observations obtained at the South Pole with the highly-successful predecessors of BICEP Array: BICEP2, Keck Array, and BICEP3. In addition, the applicant may develop new detector arrays for expanded frequency coverage for coming seasons, and technology for larger focal plane arrays for new experiments under development, including balloon- and space-based. Depending on skills and scientific interest, candidates may participate in the development of TIME, a [CII] tomography experiment designed to probe the epoch of reionization, and possibly of SPHEREx (http://spherex.caltech.edu/), a near-infrared NASA Medium Explorer mission currently in Phase A.
Applicants should have a Ph.D in physics or astronomy with a strong background in instrumentation and data analysis. Anticipated start date is October 2018. The position is for a term of three (3) years with the possibility of reappointment assuming satisfactory performance and availability of funding. All applications received by March 1st will be considered and the position will remain open until filled. Applicants should prepare a cover letter, a statement of research interests, CV and publication list as a single PDF with the filename LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_bock-job-2018.pdf. This file attachment should be emailed to [email protected]. Emails sent to this address are not otherwise monitored. Please do not send text emails. Applicants should also arrange for three (3) letters of recommendation to be confidentially submitted to the same email address with the filename LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME-REFEREELASTNAME.pdf.
