Job Description

We invite applications for two postdoctoral researcher positions to participate in the L-INTENSE project ("Lyα Intensity Mapping of the High Redshift Intergalactic Medium") funded jointly by DFG and ANR. In this project, we will use deep-field data from the MUSE integral-field spectrograph at the ESO-VLT to search for ultra-faint Lyα emission from diffuse hydrogen in space. One position will be based at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) in Germany, the other at the Observatoire de Lyon (CRAL) in France. Funding is available for 3 years in both cases.

Candidates will be reviewed and selected jointly for the two positions, based on their research expertise and match to the project requirements. Experience in the following areas will be evaluated: Analysis of large IFU datasets; spectroscopic survey of high redshift galaxies; intensity mapping with 3D data; stacking of astronomical images (e.g. Lyα narrowband imaging); luminosity functions and population statistics of Lyα emitters; exploitation of cosmological simulations. Applications should explicitly detail on these aspects, as well as explaining any other skills that could be beneficial for the project.

The postdocs will join the MUSE GTO collaboration and have the chance to contribute to other GTO science activities.

AIP and CRAL are equal opportunity employers who value diversity. We particularly encourage women and other underrepresented groups to apply.

To apply, please submit a single PDF with curriculum vitae and statements on education, past research experience, skills, and career expectations to one of the two addresses given below. Applicants should name three senior scientists (with email addresses) willing to provide recommendation letters upon request. All applications will be considered for both AIP and CRAL unless an explicit preference is given.

Review of applications will begin Jan 15, 2021, and continue until the positions are filled. Both positions will be available as of September 2021.

Included Benefits:
Employer contributions to medical and dental insurance, maternity leave, and retirement benefits.
