What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking multiple postdoctoral researchers to work within a multi-disciplinary team of computational physicists, data-scientists and experimentalists to perform research in the area of Bayesian data analysis and machine learning applied to inertial confinement fusion, high energy density plasmas, pulsed power applications, along with broader topics in plasma physics and astrophysics.

Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and train surrogate models based on post-processed simulation data sets using a range of machine learning algorithms
  • Perform comparison of surrogate models based on a variety of metrics, including speed and accuracy
  • Develop AI tools for the processing of a wide range of experimental data allowing the extraction of quantities of interest with quantified uncertainties
  • Develop and apply methods to utilize disparate data to jointly constrain models and inform future experiments
  • Collaborate with experimental and diagnostic physicists and engineers not only at Sandia, but the broader HED and ICF communities
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at appropriate scientific conferences

Applicants on this posting may interviewed and hired by multiple organizations within Center 1600.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Astronomy or closely related scientific field
  • Demonstrated technical competence in a programming language (e.g. Python/C/C++/FORTRAN)
  • Demonstrated technical competence in data science through publications in refereed journals
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q-Level security clearance
