Description

 

The http://www.physics.sunysb.edu/Physics/ at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position in observational astronomy. Applicants in all areas of observational astronomy are encouraged to apply. We especially welcome candidates with an interest in transient / time-domain astronomy.

 

The person holding this position will report to the Chair of the Physics and Astronomy Department. The successful applicant will be expected to engage in independently funded research characterized by creativity and vision. The faculty member will perform research on topics of the member's choice in observational astronomy, possibly in addition to other topics in astronomy and astrophysics. Preference given to those with experience in transient/time-domain astronomy. The faculty member may collaborate with senior members of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and of the C. N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP) with interests in astronomy, as well as with their peers at other educational institutes. During the academic year the faculty member may be asked to give seminars on the member's work. The faculty member will teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses at the Department of Physics and Astronomy and will be expected to encourage, and as appropriate participate in, the research and mentorship of graduate students and postdoctoral associates. The faculty member will participate in departmental, university and professional service.

 

The successful candidate will join the http://www.astro.sunysb.edu/ at Stony Brook. The group is home to a variety of research topics, ranging from exoplanets to cosmology. Our faculty members are active in the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (https://lsstdesc.org/), the https://www.roman-hls-cosmology.space/, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (https://www.ligo.caltech.edu/), the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (http://www.princeton.edu/act/), the https://simonsobservatory.org/, https://cmb-s4.org/, and https://cmb-hd.org/. Stony Brook is a member of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (https://www.aura-astronomy.org/), and the Small & Moderate Aperture Research Telescope System (http://www.astro.yale.edu/smarts/) consortium.

 

Our group has strong computational expertise, and close ties with Stony Brook's Institute for Advanced Computational Science (https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/iacs/index.php) and the Center for Computational Astrophysics (https://www.simonsfoundation.org/flatiron/center-for-computational-astro...) at the https://www.simonsfoundation.org/flatiron/. We work closely with the other physics programs at Stony Brook, including the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics (http://insti.physics.sunysb.edu/) and the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics (http://scgp.stonybrook.edu/), as well as nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory (https://www.bnl.gov/LSST/).

 

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics or closely related field and a record of research related to observational astronomy.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Additional postdoctoral experience and a demonstrated record of research leadership in observational astronomy and experience in transient/time-domain astronomy.
