Job Description

The Max-Planck-Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in Garching, Germany, is a world-leading institute in space- and ground-based experimental astrophysics, with leading roles in a number of large astronomical projects.

Applications are invited for a staff position in the High-Energy Group at MPE.

The successful candidate is expected to lead a research program on X-ray studies of clusters of galaxies utilising the forthcoming all-sky survey by the eROSITA instrument, which is due for launch on the SRG mission in 2019. Access to a wide variety of complementary ground-based data will also be available.

Applicants must have a Ph.D in astronomy, astrophysics or a closely-related field, as well as significant postdoctoral experience, and have an internationally-recognised record of research achievements and refereed publications relating to clusters of galaxies. Specific expertise in X-ray observations, cluster surveys and/or cluster cosmology would also be highly desirable.

The position is available immediately. Salary will follow the framework of public service employees in Germany (TVöD) and be commensurate with level of experience. The position is expected to be filled on a tenure-track basis, with the appointee being considered for a permanent position not more than 5 years after the initial appointment. Senior candidates who already have tenure may be considered for immediate appointment to a permanent position.

Applications should include a curriculum vitae, the names and contact details of three referees, a list of publications, and a brief description of both current research interests and plans for the exploitation of the eROSITA cluster survey. Later submissions will be considered if received before the selection process is completed.

Applicants should submit their documents (in English, and in PDF form) online (https://recruitingapp-5257.de.umantis.com/Vacancies/348/Application/CheckLogin/2?lang=eng ), by 31 January 2019.
