Announcement
Job Announcement Text:

The Astronomy Department at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for 1-2 postdoctoral fellows to work with Prof. Steven Finkelstein on observational galaxy evolution at high redshift.  Applicants with experience in this field, including but not limited to processing and analyzing imaging and spectroscopic survey data and spectral energy distribution fitting, are particularly encouraged to apply.  Applicants with a desire to assist in the mentoring of graduate students and play a role in our departmental community are also encouraged to apply.

The primary responsibilities will be to study galaxy evolution using data from the James Webb Space Telescope, including public imaging and spectroscopic data from ERS programs, available data from GTO programs, and other early cycle programs.  The applicant will be encouraged to use up to 50% of their time to lead additional research programs of mutual interest, including with JWST, HETDEX (www.hetdex.org), ALMA, or other facilities.

UT Austin has a large astronomy department, with expertise in areas from theoretical cosmology to exoplanets, and is committed to an equitable and inclusive environment.  The successful applicant will have access to the McDonald Observatory facilities, including the 10m HET and 2.7m Smith telescopes, access to high-performance computing resources within the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC), and opportunities for involvement with the GMT.  Austin is a vibrant city with an active music and cultural scene, and excellent weather allowing year-round outdoor activities.

By the anticipated starting date of September 1st, 2018, the applicants should have obtained a Ph.D. in Astronomy or Physics.  The appointment is for a period of three years based on satisfactory performance.  Salary will be commensurate with experience.  UT has an excellent benefits program (hr.utexas.edu/prospective/benefits).

Applicants should submit a CV, list of publications, statement of current and future research interests, and a list of three people who can be contacted for letters of reference.  Complete applications received by December 1st, 2017 will receive full consideration.  Applications will only be accepted as a single PDF sent to: [email protected], under a subject heading “Postdoc Position — YOUR NAME”.  Questions regarding this position should be addressed to Steven Finkelstein at (512) 471-1483 or [email protected].  The University of Texas at Austin is an Equal Opportunity Employer; astronomers from traditionally marginalized racial or ethnic backgrounds and women are especially encouraged to apply.
