Description:

Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is the science operations center for the Hubble Space Telescope and will be for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), planned to launch in 2021, and the Nancy Roman Grace Space Telescope, planned to launch in 2025. We are looking for a Data Scientist to help develop our next generation of tools for calibration and analysis of the observations from our flagship missions.

**STScI has all staff working remotely during COVID-19 crisis. The safety of our staff and community is our top priority. Primary Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for improving our calibration pipelines and data processing through applying innovative data science techniques. 

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Helping design solutions for the large data volumes of future missions
  • Developing new projects to improve the performance or efficiency of our existing pipelines
  • Working with teams to use the latest data science tools to implement solutions
  • Qualifications and Job Requirements:
  • You are able to identify problems and implement solutions and offer guidance to development teams and end-users.
  • Experience in data science concepts such as machine learning, neural networks, feature reduction, and statistics
  • Experience in data science tools such as tensor flow, keras, pytorch, or scikit-learn
  • Familiarity in image processing or astronomical observations
  • Familiarity with python or similar programming languages
  • Familiarity with SQL or similar database languages
  • Familiarity with cloud based machine learning solutions
  • Familiarity using Git in a team setting
  • Strong teamwork, analytical, problem-solving, planning and organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.

Bachelor’s Degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, Astronomy, or related field. The position level and salary are commensurate with education and experience.
