Detailed Job Description

 

The Rochester Institute of Technology seeks a visionary and dynamic leader to serve as the Director of the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science (CIS), one of six academic units within the College of Science. The faculty and staff of CIS, which offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in imaging science, are engaged in a wide variety of cutting-edge imaging science research areas, from remote sensing and advanced optics instrumentation to computer vision and virtual reality. As the chief academic, fiscal, and administrative officer of CIS, the Director is responsible for leading the Center's academic and research programs and for managing its operational activities, including overseeing student, faculty, staff and academic affairs. The Director works closely with faculty to develop a strategic vision for the Center that yields new research directions and drives the evolution of its undergraduate and graduate curricula, and the Director provides advocacy for CIS research and academic programs within and beyond RIT. The daily operation of the Center requires an open and inclusive management style that inspires and supports the faculty, staff, and students in their individual and collaborative efforts. Additional responsibilities include:

 

• Extending the Center's national and global reputation and impact by leveraging the interdisciplinary collaboration within the Center, across RIT, and with its partners in academia, government, and industry

• Providing leadership and advocacy for the pursuit of external funds for the Center by cultivating existing and prospective donors and research partners, engaging federal and state funding agencies, and leading opportunities for center-wide strategic initiatives

• Striving for student success and ensuring the continuous improvement of CIS academic programs

• Recruiting, supporting, and advocating for faculty and staff at all levels

 

CIS Director appointments are five-year renewable terms.

 

Department/College Description

 

The Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science (CIS) is an interdisciplinary university research and academic unit dedicated to advancing the frontiers of imaging science and its technical applications, enabled by its robust research portfolio and degree programs. Imaging science is a diverse field including all aspects from image acquisition to interpretation by algorithms or people. The Center’s active research areas include remote sensing, optics, photonics, lasers, human vision, computer vision, artificial intelligence, astronomy and space science, instrumentation, augmented and virtual reality, detectors, historical document imaging, light-matter interactions, nano-imaging, and biomedical imaging. With B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs that focus on the physics of image formation, quantitative spectral and temporal image analysis, information extraction, image processing, and the development and application of sensor and imaging instrumentation systems, the Center’s graduates are in high demand. At present, these programs comprise 100 Ph.D students, 25 M.S. students and 40 B.S. students. The Center’s 19 core tenure-track faculty, six research faculty, and 15 research scientists are responsible for annually attracting roughly $5M of research funding, derived from funding sources that include NSF, NIH, NASA, DoD, foundations, and industry. CIS faculty have extensive internal and external collaborations (industry and national labs), and contribute to or are affiliated with RIT’s Ph.D. programs in color science, astrophysical sciences & technology, microsystems engineering, and computing & information sciences. • An earned doctorate in a STEM or STEM-related field

• Distinguished publication and funding records that feature research reliant on, contributing to, or synergistic with imaging science

• Significant experience in training, mentorship, and/or education of undergraduate and graduate students and/or junior researchers

• Significant leadership experience commensurate with that of an academic department chair or industry/laboratory research group leader

 

Desired Qualifications

• Significant science project management experience

• A track record of success in advocacy and fundraising for research and/or academic programs
