The Astronomy department at Columbia University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position in Theory and Simulation of Astrophysical Plasmas. Working with Professor Lorenzo Sironi, the successful candidate will participate in research on collisionless shocks, magnetic reconnection, turbulence, and plasma instabilities in application to astrophysical high-energy sources. S/he will participate in both independent and collaborative research, will have access to local and national supercomputing facilities and research/travel support funds.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in Astronomy, Physics, or Astrophysics by the date of the appointment. A background in high-energy astrophysics, fluid dynamics and plasma physics, computational methods (MHD and/or kinetic particle-in-cell methods) is preferred. The expected start date for this position is on or around September 1, 2019. The appointment is initially for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to three years.
