The department of Steward Observatory seeks applicants to fill a Postdoc position in galaxy evolution, star formation, UV/VIS instrumentation, including detector development, spectrograph design, and flight projects working with Prof. Erika Hamden in her UV group at the University of Arizona. The applicant will have a leading role in current and new projects including but not limited to:

  • Working on Aspera, (PI: Dr. Carlos Vargas), a funded UV SmallSat mission observing coronal gas in nearby galaxies.
  • Developing Hyperion, a $290 M UV spectrograph designed to observe molecular hydrogen in our galaxy 
  • Assisting with FIREBall, a UV multi-object spectrograph
  • Developing UV detector technology through an ongoing collaboration with JPL. 
  • Design and proposal writing for new ground and space based spectrographs and missions. 

Applicants should have a demonstrated record of success working on UV data, spectroscopic data at any wavelength, or with detectors/hardware/electronics systems at any wavelength. Applicants are encouraged to develop their own science portfolio while working in Prof. Hamden’s group.  This will be a three year assignment.
