Job Description

Applications are invited for a full-time postdoctoral research position at the Hiroshima Astrophysical Science Center (HASC), Hiroshima University, Japan. The successful candidate will work on local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) together with Prof. Hanae Inami at HASC and with the GOALS team. The Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) has used multi-wavelength data taken with both space- and ground-based telescopes to study LIRGs in the local universe. One of the projects involves working on the JWST ERS Program 1328 data. The appointee will also be expected to spend a small fraction (< 10%) of their time helping with some activities, such as outreach, led by HASC. 
 
The start date is expected to be in the first half of 2022. The position is for a period of up to 3 years, to be renewed on a yearly basis based on achievements, and finishing before the end of March 2025. If the appointee was previously employed by Hiroshima University after 1 April, 2013, the maximum duration of the contract will have to be 10 years including the previous employment durations. 
  
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in astronomy, astrophysics, or an equivalent discipline at the time of starting the position. Applicants are expected to have experience in scientific coding, preferably with Python. The following skills will be advantageous for the position:  

  • a strong background in studying galaxies 
  • experience in observations, especially in the optical/infrared 
  • English skills for scientific discussions
