Job Description

The Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST) Multi-Channel Imager (MCI) and Integral Field Spectrograph (IFS) teams at the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHAO) are seeking to fill a number of postdoctoral positions, intended for active young astronomers of all nationalities to work on developments of scientific cases and pipelines for the CSST MCI and IFS. CSST is a space-based 2m NUV/Optical telescope. CSST MCI provides a three-channel simultaneous imaging covering the wavelength range of 0.255 to 1 micron at the HST-like spatial resolution in a 7.5’x7.5’ field of view. CSST IFS is able to do Integral Field Spectroscopic observations with a 0.2" spatial resolution and the full optical wavelength coverage from 0.35 to 1 micron.

Applicants who have research experiences with deep imaging or Integral Field Spectrograph are especially encouraged to apply. The postdocs are expected to spend roughly 50% of their time on project-related work. They are also expected to work closely with the staff members in the team.

SHAO in general has broad astrophysical research directions, including galaxy formation and evolution, AGNs and high energy astrophysics, cosmology, the structure and evolution of the Milky Way, galactic dynamics, numerical astrophysics, radio astrophysics, gravitational astrophysics, and extra-solar planets. Members of the institute are actively involved in other important international and domestic projects such as SKA, EHT, SDSS-IV, LSST, LAMOST, HXMT, eXTP, and FAST. The astrophysics division employs a mix of Chinese and international researchers, including 50 faculty members, 20 postdocs, and 70 PhD students. More information can be found at http://astro-en.shao.cas.cn.

The appointment is awarded for three years initially, extendable for up to six years, and there are possibilities of continuous appointments as a staff member. The start date is flexible. Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a brief research summary, a brief plan of future research, and arrange for three reference letters to be sent directly to Prof. Zhen-Ya Zheng and Prof. Lei Hao at [email protected]. For full consideration, applications should arrive before December 5, 2022. Later applications will also be accepted until the positions are filled.
