Job Description

Position Description: The NMT Department of Physics seeks an astrophysicist interested in working with, and making use of, the Magdalena Ridge Observatory Interferometer (MROI).  The successful candidate will have a proven track record of scientific publications using optical/infrared interferometric data which is well-aligned with the Key Science Mission of the MROI.  Additionally, the successful candidate will have teaching experience in a typical physics undergraduate curriculum as well as the ability to garner peer-reviewed grant funding to support research and students.  The selected candidate will ideally start at NMT by 8/2020.

Department Description:  The NMT Physics Department is home to 12 faculty, 80 undergraduate majors and about 20 graduate students.  The research foci of the department are astrophysics (radio, optical/infrared and modeling/theory) and atmospheric physics (convection/dynamics, atmospheric electricity/chemistry, and climate).  Co-located with the operational headquarters of the VLA, we also collaborate with NRAO astronomers and participate in local conferences/research with nearby national labs (Sandia, AFRL and Los Alamos).  The MROI, located 25 miles from campus, is managed as a separate research facility at NMT and includes 20 professional engineering/science staff.  First fringes for the interferometer are anticipated in late 2020. See www.mro.nmt.edu for more details about the MROI.

Regional Attractions: NMT is located in Socorro, in the scenic Rio Grande River Valley, a few hours south on I-25 of Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Nearby mountains and desert canyons provide for excellent hiking, climbing, and mountain biking opportunities. The Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, located south of Socorro, is along the major north-south flyway and offers some of the best birding in the USA.

Application Details and Deadline: For best consideration please apply by Oct 21, 2019. Applications can be made electronically using a single PDF file and must include a CV, and statements regarding teaching philosophy and research plans.  All applications must be copied to both [email protected] and [email protected].

Equal Employment Opportunity: NMT is committed to creating a community in which a diverse population can learn, live, and work in an atmosphere of tolerance, civility and respect for the rights and sensibilities of each individual. NMT is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
