Job Description

Physicist Divisional Fellow - 84184
Organization: PH-Physics

The Physics Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) invites applications for a Divisional Fellow appointment from scientists with a record of substantial accomplishment and creative ability. The Divisional Fellow position is a five-year appointment with the expectation of promotion to a career position as Senior Scientist and is comparable to a tenure track junior faculty position at a university. An appointment directly to a career scientist position may be considered in exceptional circumstances.

There is currently one position available for an outstanding candidate in the field of experimental or observational cosmology. The LBNL cosmology group is making central contributions in the areas of Supernova Cosmology, Large Scale Structure and Cosmic Microwave Background. LBNL is the lead laboratory for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), which will begin taking data in 2019, and plays a leading role in the development of computational and analysis techniques for large cosmology surveys. Candidates interested in contributing to the existing programs are encouraged to apply. For more information on the Physics Division's research programs, see http://physics.lbl.gov.

The Divisional Fellow is expected to play a leadership role in her/his scientific field and will be encouraged to originate research in data analysis or in the development or construction of new detectors and/or related experimental techniques. The successful candidate is expected to exercise independent judgment and contribute to research in an original manner, solving complex problems using ingenuity, creativity, and advanced scientific principles. The successful candidate will interact with the scientific staff within the Division, the Laboratory and the international community, and can provide supervision for postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent and at least two years of research experience beyond the Ph.D. in experimental or observational cosmology, as well as demonstrated leadership and original achievements in research. The ability to work in a research group environment as well as the ability to create and carry out independent research in experimental particle physics or cosmology is required.
