The Joint Institute for VLBI ERIC (JIVE) is seeking candidates for a fixed-term appointment as
SOFTWARE ENGINEER (f/m)
to be located at JIVE, Dwingeloo, The Netherlands.
The European VLBI Network (EVN) is an interferometric array of radio telescopes spread throughout Europe, extending into Asia, Africa, and Puerto Rico, and often observes in conjunction with the e-MERLIN interferometer in the UK and the VLBA in the US. The Joint Institute for VLBI ERIC (JIVE) is a European Research Infrastructure Consortium whose primary mission is to operate the EVN VLBI correlator and provide front-line support to EVN users and member telescopes. JIVE is actively developing new correlator capabilities to promote scientific exploitation of real-time e-VLBI, topics within space science, and use of larger global VLBI arrays observing with the East Asian and African VLBI Networks. JIVE is hosted in Dwingeloo by ASTRON, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy. Dutch universities are within easy reach of Dwingeloo, and interaction with other radio-astronomy institutes throughout Europe provides for a vibrant research atmosphere.
JIVE is a partner in the ESCAPE project (European Science Cluster of Astronomy & Particle physics ESFRI research infrastructures), www.escape2020.eu/escape.html, which will kick off on February 1, 2019. For Work Package 4 of ESCAPE we are inviting applications for the position of Software Engineer, becoming available between the start of the project, February 1, 2019 and August 1, 2019.
The work will deal extensively with the EVN archive located at JIVE and the Virtual Observatory (VO), a portal providing access to astronomical archives and databases around the world. Among others, the tasks of the engineer will include:
- investigating the handling of radio astronomical data in the VO;
- the definition of a VO interface to the EVN archive;
- the design of a supporting database schema;
- the implementation of web services and a database.
The skills of our candidate should include good knowledge of and proficiency in web services, databases, Java and Python, and familiarity with Linux. A background in radio astronomy, or experience in any of the physical sciences would be considered an advantage. The candidate will need to have or acquire a basic understanding of radio interferometry.
The appointment is offered for one year in the first instance with extension up to a total of three years pending good performance. The appointee will be in the formal employ of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific
