The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) invites applications for the position of Director of the Chandra X-ray Center (CXC). Located in Cambridge, MA, SAO hosts the Chandra X-ray Center which operates the Chandra X-ray Observatory for NASA and the scientific community, organizing the observations, processing the data, and distributing it along with analysis tools to scientists world-wide. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing CXC activities and staff, and acting to insure the health and safety of the Observatory while maximizing its scientific return.
The CXC Director provides scientific and administrative leadership while directing an organization of approximately 200 people with a budget of approximately $55 million per year. The CXC Director and/or his/her immediate staff are the primary points of contact between the Chandra mission and the astronomical community, including but not limited to proposal solicitation and peer review, Target of Opportunity and Director Discretionary Time requests, documentation and other similar interactions.
As a senior astrophysicist, the successful applicant will conduct basic research, at the highest level in the field of x-ray astronomy and oversee the activities of CXC scientists in the same or related fields.
