Job Description

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research position at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) as part of the HSTPROMO (High-resolution Space Telescope Proper Motion) collaboration. The successful candidate will work with Drs. Tony Sohn, Roeland van der Marel, and other team members to improve our dynamical understanding of Local Group galaxies through measurement and interpretation of their proper motions. Details about the collaboration and its work are available at  http://www.stsci.edu/~marel/hstpromo.html

The main projects focus on the dynamics of dwarf galaxies, the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies, and their satellite systems. The research involves either observational data analysis, theoretical dynamical modeling, and/or data-model comparisons. The work is focused on Hubble Space Telescope projects, but includes also anticipated James Webb Space Telescope Guaranteed Time observations, study of and comparison with Gaia measurements, analysis of related datasets from other (e.g., ground-based) facilities, and development of new techniques for proper motion measurements through combination of data from different observatories. Some time may be available for independent research or new projects in related areas.

STScI offers a dynamic postdoc environment, with an active program of journal clubs and science talks, a postdoc mentoring program, and a prime location on the Johns Hopkins University campus. The upcoming launch of the James Webb Space Telescope makes this an exciting time to come to Baltimore. STScI offers an excellent benefits package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI’s pay is commensurate to the year of Ph.D.

The nominal start date is Fall 2022, but earlier start dates are possible. Initial appointments are for two years, with renewal possible for a third year (subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding). Any questions about the position should be directed to Roeland van der Marel ([email protected]) and Tony Sohn ([email protected]).

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree at the time they start the position. Candidates may have either observational, theoretical, or mixed interests. Observational candidates should ideally have technical expertise in high-precision photometric and/or astrometric analysis of imaging data of resolved stellar populations (preferably with HST). Theoretical candidates should ideally have technical expertise in modeling or data-model comparisons relevant to the dynamics and structure of resolved nearby galaxies. Alternative expertise in related areas will be considered, when combined with willingness to take on new subject areas and learn new skills in an independent manner.

Applicants are required to complete an online application by December 10, 2021 through the direct link below.

Only use this link to apply:   https://stsci.slideroom.com/#/permalink/program/64139

The following materials will be requested in PDF format: a cover letter that indicates how the applicants interests, goals and qualifications relate to the position; curriculum vitae with list of publications; and 2-3 page statement of research interests and relevant technical expertise. Applicants will be requested to provide names and contact information of three people who will be automatically contacted by the submission system for letters of reference. Applicants should also contact these letter writers separately, to ensure that references are received by December 17, 2021. Complete applications for which all references have been received by this date will receive full consideration.
