Job Description

The University of Western Australia (UWA) node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) invites applications for 2-4 fully funded PhD scholarships (depending the on sutability of applicants). The PhD positions will be undertaken within ICRAR’s distant Universe group under the supervision of A/Prof Aaron Robotham and Dr Luke Davies as part of their Australian Research Council Future Fellowships. These projects both follow the theme of the environmental impact on galaxies over cosmic time using large international surveys/collaborations (AAT-GAMA, AAT-DEVILS, 4MOST-WAVES, HST-SkySurf, ASKAP-DINGO, MeerKAT-MIGHTEE). Successful applicants will lead cutting edge research and develop a broad range of skills across many regimes, potentially including the analysis of large imaging datasets from x-ray to radio wavelengths targeting galaxies and AGN, optical spectroscopy, applying state-of-the-art analysis codes to astronomical data, high-level statistical analyses, and management/analysis of Big Data samples.

Applicants are requested to submit a 1-page cover letter indicating their research experience and suitability, a C.V., evidence of English proficiency (as required by UWA, see links below), and academic transcripts to [email protected] no later than 30th June 2021. Applicants should also arrange for two letters of reference to be sent to the same address by the closing date. Shortlisted candidates will then be interviewed and their suitability assessed. Successful candidates will be expected to start as soon as possible, but no later than January 2022. Scholarships cover tuition fees, health insurance, living allowance and research/travel expenses.

ICRAR is one of Australia’s top astronomical research institutes. Established in 2009 as a high profile joint venture between Curtin University and UWA, ICRAR hosts a vibrant and friendly research environment. Situated on the Swan River, UWA is one of Australia’s most picturesque campuses. ICRAR/UWA is also committed to equity and diversity and encourages applications from all qualified candidates.
