Job Description

The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics in Potsdam, Germany (AIP) invites applications for a PhD student position in the research group of Dr. Marcel Pawlowski. The successful applicant will also become part of Prof. Maria-Rosa Cioni’s Dwarf Galaxies section and collaborate with other researchers at the AIP.

The project studies satellite galaxy systems, with emphasis on the Milky Way system and signatures of the infall of dwarf galaxies in groups. It involves analyzing cosmological simulations, modeling orbital dynamics, and using observational data such as provided by Gaia.

We are looking for a new member of our internationally diverse team, who is interested in working and learning together while contributing to a culture of open debate. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in astrophysics or a related discipline at the time of taking up the position. Any of the following skills would be advantageous: experience in scientific coding (preferentially Python), experience with running or analyzing numerical simulations, or observational studies of galaxies or proper motions. Advanced English skills are a requirement.

The anticipated start date is June 2022, but an earlier or later start can be negotiated. The AIP is an equal opportunity employer who values diversity and particularly encourages women and other underrepresented groups to apply.

To apply, please send a cover letter motivating the application, a CV, and a 1-page statement of research interests/experiences as a single pdf file to [email protected]. The application should contain your Master degree certificate or expected degree completion date, and a link to the Master thesis if available. Please also arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent to the same address. Applications received by December 31, 2021 will be given full consideration.
