Are you interested in supporting space based observatories that impact our universe? The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is seeking a Science Operations Analyst to support science planning operations for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Science Operations Analysts work within the Long Range Planning Group (LRPG) to organize and maintain the observing plan that another team in Science & Mission Scheduling Branch (SMSB) uses to create detailed time-lines that ensure the safe operation and most efficient use possible of the Observatories.

This position can support hybrid work. Candidates must reside in our local market or be willing to relocate.  Relocation assistance provided. This position occasionally involves evening or weekend work to react to short-term science program changes or spacecraft events.

Your Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Astronomy or Mathematics is required. Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or discipline with prior science planning and scheduling experience may also be considered.

No prior practical experience is required; prior experience or course work associated with space science mission development, planning, scheduling, orbital dynamics, and instrumentation is beneficial. 

Basic knowledge of physics, astronomy, and orbital mechanics concepts is required.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills to include technical writing skills.

Knowledge of UNIX or LINUX operating systems is required.

Working knowledge of Python or a similar scripting language, along with SQL, desirable.

Working knowledge of Git, or another version control system, is also desired.

Ability to formulate and resolve problems through research and application of standard scientific, mathematical and computation skills and techniques.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships, both internally and externally and actively contribute to a team environment.

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail and follow-through are essential.

 Candidates must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident. ITAR clearance is required.
