Job Description

The Department of Physics at NC State University invites qualified candidates to apply for a tenure-track position in astrophysics or astronomy. We plan to hire at the assistant professor level, but will also consider exceptionally qualified senior applicants.

The successful candidate will establish a highly competitive, independent research program that complements the department’s current strengths. The research interests of current faculty include observational and theoretical / computational astrophysics: stellar astrophysics, gravitational physics, extragalactic astrophysics, and nuclear/neutrino astrophysics. In addition, the position holder will: (i) advise and direct undergraduate students, graduate students and post doctoral research associates; (ii) teach undergraduate and graduate classes at the standard departmental teaching load for research-active faculty; and (iii) provide service to the Department, University, and wider professional community. Inclusiveness and diversity are critical to the success of the College of Sciences and the University. The selected candidate will be expected to foster an environment that is supportive and welcoming of all groups.

Minimum qualifications include an earned Ph.D. degree in physics, astronomy or a physics/astronomy-related area. To receive full consideration, applications for the Fall 2023 academic year should be received by November 15, 2022. To apply, please visit https://jobs.ncsu.edu and designate position number #00104920. You will be required to send a curriculum vitae, a teaching statement, an anonymized research statement, a diversity statement, and contact information for at least three professional references. Applicants should also arrange to have at least three letters of recommendation sent by e-mail to [email protected], with the name of the applicant in the subject line. T

he first evaluation of the application is based solely on the scientific merit of the anonymized Research Statement, and the extent to which the candidate makes the case that they complement the current department strengths. The Research Statements will be screened and redacted if necessary so that candidate names, collaborators, supervisors, institutions, and journal names are not visible in the statement. Other than the Research Statement, no other parts of the application need to be anonymized.
