Job Description

The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) calls for applications for the Specially Appointed Associate Professor or Specially Appointed Assistant Professor position as Support Scientist at the East Asian ALMA Regional Center (EA-ARC) of the NAOJ Chile Observatory to enhance the team to support ALMA Science Operations.
1. Positions: ARC Support Scientist (5-year non-tenure-track Specially Appointed Associate Professor or Specially Appointed Assistant Professor, one position)

2. (1) Division: NAOJ Chile Observatory, East Asian ARC (2) Duty station: Mitaka, Tokyo

3. Specialized field: radio astronomy

4. Job Description: Join the EA-ARC team as a Support Scientist and a) conduct the tasks needed for ALMA Science Operations and b) do scientific research using ALMA. The Science Operations tasks conducted by the team include:
- Proposal preparation support, observing program preparation support, data reduction and data quality assurance, pipeline data reduction, user helpdesk, etc.
- Contribution to Astronomer on Duty or Systems/Science Verification at JAO in Chile (one month visit to JAO per year)
- Promotion of science with ALMA by contributions at science meetings and ALMA East Asian Users Meeting
- Support of operation of ASTE telescope

Specially Appointed Associate Professor should lead some of the EA ARC major activities in addition to above.

Support Scientist will assign 75% of his/her working time to the above duties.
The remaining 25% should be used for his/her own scientific research related to ALMA such as:
- Research using ALMA with prominent results
- Explore new research subjects using ALMA

5. (1) The term starts on or after 2017 July 1. (2) The term is for five years. Annual performance review will be conducted.

6. Qualification: the applicant shall have a doctor degree (or equivalent) in astronomy or related fields, and has the following capabilities:
- Willing to make observational researches with interest using radio astronomy instruments
- Can join, discuss and collaborate in an English-speaking team
- Willing to collaborate in a team doing Science Operations
- Experience in reducing ALMA data is highly desired

11. (1) Selected candidates in the final short list may be interviewed by the selection committee either via internet or face-to-face. The expenses for the interview will not be covered by NAOJ.
(2) Final decision will be made by the NAOJ Advisory Committee for Research and Management.
(3) ARC Support Scientist is employed by NAOJ as a fixed-term annual-salary based staff. The annual salary will be similar to that of the corresponding tenured Assocoate or Assistant Professor position. For health insurance and pension plans, please contact the address given in 9. (2).
