Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Data Science Division has an opening for a Computational Cosmology Center Group Lead to join the team.
The Computational Cosmology Center (the C3 Group) is a team of astrophysicists, computational scientists, engineers, post-docs, and students with expertise in advanced computing techniques and their application to scientific collaborations, including cosmology and experimental and theoretical astrophysics. The C3 group was formed by the Computational Research and Physics Divisions at LBNL to focus on developing the tools, techniques, and technologies to meet the analysis challenges posed by present and future cosmological data sets. C3 researchers are embedded in large experimental or simulation focused collaborations to provide the cyberinfrastructure and underlying models for scientific data analysis and exploration.
This position is for a Computer Staff Scientist as group lead of the C3 Group in the Computational Science Department in the Scientific Data Division. In this exciting role, you will conduct and lead computing research and/or development projects within or related to ongoing or future cosmology science collaborations including DESI, LSST-DESC, CMB-S4, Euclid, WFIRST among others.
What You Will Do:
- Provide leadership in and be responsible for securing funding for an active research and development program in your technical areas.
- Be responsible for all significant projects and programs in the group with accountability for results, and represent the Department and Division to funding agencies.
- Provide supervision, guidance and mentoring for the professionals and technical support staff in the group.
- Collaborate with both computer scientists and astrophysicists to design, develop, and deploy robust, functional software needed by researchers to conduct and analyze physics experiments.
- Provide technical and project leadership to collaborators at LBNL and collaborating institutions in the USA and abroad.
- Develop and Deploy production quality software for scientific experiments and collaborations.
- Analyze, investigate, research, and develop new computing and information technologies directly applicable to current science projects as well as potential, future projects.
- Provide high-level technical contributions in your own field, demonstrating broad authority and in-depth knowledge in your area of expertise.
- Travel to and present at collaboration meetings and conferences.
- Ensure that all relevant Environment Health & Safety requirements are met and trainings are taken by everyone in your group.
- Maintain and nurture a relationship with relevant DOE HQ divisions and other divisions at LBL.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
- Conceive, prepare, and submit proposals for individual funding for original research or development projects related to computing in scientific collaborations.
- Work in a safe manner and contribute to a safe and healthy work environment by being aware of potential hazards, take action to correct deficiencies, and make others aware of health and safety requirements. Supervisors have a particular accountability to model and assure that this expectation is met by all employees within their scope of supervision.
What is Required:
- Ph.D. in Physics, Astrophysics, Astronomy, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational Sciences, or related fields, or overall equivalent experience.
- At least five years of experience in conducting original research in scientific computing and computational science.
- Demonstrated experience in scientific research with a strong publication record.
- Demonstrated record in securing research funding.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with colleagues from different backgrounds with different technical skill sets.
- Must have excellent problem-solving skills. Ability to work well in a team environment with astrophysicists, physicists, and computing professionals from within the Laboratory as well as remote institutions. Good written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience writing robust applications used for production by multiple people over an extended time period in both cluster and HPC facilities. Demonstrated ability to design and implement software deliverables on a time-critical path.
- Demonstrated ability to stay ahead of a rapidly developing technology. Pursuit of emerging and advanced technologies should be of long-term interest. Possess in-depth working knowledge of current and upcoming computing issues in Cosmology and Astrophysics.
- Demonstrated expertise in multiple computer languages on various operating systems. Including, but not limited to C++, Java, Python, Unix, and Linux. Expertise in use of best practices and methodologies in software engineering.
- Demonstrated ability to be a decisive leader and exercise independent judgment.
- Knowledge of other scientific computing disciplines.
- Familiarity with Grid concepts, middleware, workflows, and applications.
- Experience with databases.
