Job Description

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Georgia State University (GSU) is recruiting an extragalactic astronomer for a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a start date in Fall 2020. The new hire will be expected to develop an innovative, externally funded research program in an area that complements current departmental strengths (http://phy-astr.gsu.edu).  They will also be expected to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students and to take an active role in service activities within GSU and the wider profession.

Georgia State University is a large, urban research university in Atlanta and a minority-serving institution. GSU is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and providing a supportive atmosphere, and we especially encourage applications from members of underrepresented groups in physics and astronomy.  Training students to become creative and independent scientists and teachers in a diverse environment is a major focus of our department.

The astronomy group comprises nearly half of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.  Currently, there are 10 faculty members conducting research in extragalactic astronomy, stellar astronomy, and solar physics.  GSU owns and operates the CHARA array, operates the SMARTS 1.5m and 0.9m telescopes, and is a partner in the Apache Point Observatory 3.5m telescope.  The department also has its own instrument shop and high-performance computing cluster.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a closely related field, and postdoctoral research experience. A complete application will include: 1) a curriculum vitae with a publication list, 2) a statement of research interests describing how the proposed research will complement existing research at GSU, 3) a statement of teaching and mentoring philosophy and experience that incorporates efforts to foster diversity and inclusion, and 4) contact information for at least three professional references. Applications should be sent as a single PDF file via email to [email protected]. Questions regarding the position may be addressed to the search committee chair, Dr. Misty Bentz, at [email protected].

Applications received by November 15, 2019, will receive full consideration. An offer of employment will be conditional on background verification. Georgia State University is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate against applicants due to race, ethnicity, sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion, veteran status, or on the basis of disability or any other federal, state or local protected class.
