Job Description

The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in Galactic Archaeology starting in the second half of 2022.

The Position

The candidate will join the Milky Way and Local Volume section of AIP and work in the general field of Galactic Archaeology, aiming to improve our understanding of the formation and evolution processes of the Milky Way galaxy and similar galaxies. Of particular interest is the exploitation of the science potential of ESA’s Gaia mission in combination with large spectroscopic surveys, especially those to be carried out with the 4MOST facility (www.4most.eu). The institute is located in the beautiful Potsdam-Babelsberg area, at the southwestern border of the Berlin metropolitan area. The AIP continues the tradition of the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam and the Berlin Observatory (founded 1700) and has about 200 employees.

Requirements and selection criteria

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in astrophysics or a related discipline at the time of starting the position. Applications are encouraged from scientists with an excellent track record of high-quality research publications in their respective sub-field. Experience in the following fields is advantageous for the position: stellar spectroscopy and stellar abundance analysis, Milky Way formation models and simulations, supervised and unsupervised Machine Learning techniques, and working within extended science collaborations.
