Job Description

We are seeking an ambitious, highly-qualified postdoctoral researcher to work in the “ORION-B” consortium led by Jérôme Pety at IRAM and Maryvonne Gerin at Observatoire de Paris (France).

The offered position is funded by a French Research Agency (ANR) grant "Detailed Analysis of the ISM (DAOISM)". The team focuses on topics relating to the physics of the interstellar medium and the characterization of the gas properties in relation with star formation, from the core scale (< 0.1pc) to the molecular cloud scale (10pc) using an ambitious survey of the Orion-B molecular cloud at millimeter wavelengths, combined with polarization data from SOFIA and JCMT.

The successful candidate will be associated to the Orion-B and DAOISM projects, and will exploit the kinematical, chemical and polarization information available in the ORION-B surveys. More specifically the work could be focused on the characterization of the 3D structure, turbulent modes within the Orion B cloud, and how they relate to the ionization degree and the magnetic field. The candidate will work in collaboration with the team members in Paris, Grenoble and Toulouse. The team includes astronomers with expertise in interstellar medium, millimeter observations and chemical models, and benefits from a strong collaboration with experts in signal processing and artificial intelligence.

We seek candidates with a Ph.D. degree in astronomy or a related field in combination with experience in studies of the interstellar medium and star formation.  A previous experience in using millimeter observations will be appreciated.

The starting date is expected to be no later than November 2022, with an earlier start date also possible. The appointment will be for a period of 2 years. The salary will be according to the French public service scale.

Interested candidates should send a cover letter, brief statement of research interests and achievements (max. 4 pages), curriculum vitae, and publication list in a single pdf file to Maryvonne Gerin ([email protected]). Applicants should also arrange to have three letters of reference separately sent to the above email address.

Applications submitted before February,28th, 2022 will receive full consideration. The position will remain open until filled.
