Job Description

The Columbia University Astrophysics Laboratory (CAL) invites applications for two Postdoctoral Research Scientist positions in solar physics. The successful candidate will join the group headed by Drs. Michael Hahn and Daniel Wolf Savin; and will perform studies on the properties of plasma waves in the transition region and corona using spectroscopic observations (many of these observations are expected to come from DKIST). The appointment(s) will be initially for the term of one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years; this is contingent upon the availability of funds and mutual satisfaction. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. or the equivalent degree in Solar Physics, Astrophysics, Physics, Applied Physics, Plasma Physics, or a related discipline. The desired laboratory skills include data analysis, spectroscopy, ground-based and satellite-based solar observations, Fourier methods, image analysis, magnetic field extrapolation; and an understanding of solar physics and basic plasma physics. Desired computer skills include programming in IDL or a related language, Linux/Mac, Windows OS, etc. The successful candidate will have a strong background in at least some of the areas listed above, a proven research ability, and evidence of future research potential. They will be expected to work well independently as well as cooperatively with a team, and to communicate the results of their research both orally and in writing. Demonstrated written and oral communication skills are highly desirable. Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae (including a list of publications), and statement of past research, and arrange to have three letters of reference sent directly by the writer. All material must be sent to [email protected]. Applications will be considered only after all of the requested material has been received. Application screening will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Questions can be sent to [email protected]. Columbia is an Equal Opportunity Employer/Disability/Veteran Employer. CAL values a diverse workforce and culture of inclusion which are key to attracting and engaging the brightest minds to further our record of scientific excellence and groundbreaking innovations. Applications from women, minorities, and other underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged.
