Job Description

Research Associate in Galaxy Formation and Evolution

Manchester, United Kingdom

£32,816 - £40,322 per annum

Fixed Term - 24 months from commencement of the start date

Ref: SAE-015990

Applications are invited for two postdoctoral positions to work on the properties and evolution of distant galaxies through cosmic time, with a focus on utilising data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). You will work with guaranteed time observations (GTO), early release science (ERS), and general observer time JWST data through imaging with NIRCam and spectroscopy through NIRISS and NIRSpec. With its large aperture, red wavelengths and extreme depth capabilities, even compared with the Hubble Space Telescope, postdocs hired in these positions will use JWST to answer the most fundamental questions concerning the process of the earliest galaxy formation and its relationship to reionization.

You will work with Professor Christopher Conselice at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester as a member of several larger JWST GTO and ERS teams. This project is funded under the Europen Union's European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant, EPOCHS (PI Conselice). EPOCHS is designed to study the first galaxies and their early evolution in the universe with some of the first data taken by JWST.

You should hold, or expect to achieve shortly, a PhD degree (or equivalent) in physics, astronomy, or in a closely related subject. Experience working with data on galaxies, astronomical surveys, and/or cosmological simulations is essential.

These full-time posts are available from Spring 2021 onward and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for two to three years, with possible extensions for future years depending on performance and funding.

Blended working arrangements may be considered.
