The Center for Astrophysics and Gravitation (CENTRA) is accepting applications for 6-year research positions in Astrophysics within the "Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus - 5th Edition" by the Portuguese national funding agency for science and technology: “Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia” (FCT).
The COSTAR/CENTRA group is looking for candidates working in astrophysics, astronomy, cosmology, and particle physics, focusing on dark matter and alternative theories of gravity. We welcome also candidates interested in asteroseismology, stellar astrophysics, solar physics, compact stars, observational astrophysics, observational and theoretical cosmology. Candidates can apply for one of four types of grants, depending on their expertise and experience. If you are interested in applying in any of these research topics, please send your CV and two recommendation letters to Prof. Ilidio Lopes as soon as possible (see contact details below).
CENTRA is part of the Department of Physics at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), from the University of Lisbon (Portugal). CENTRA is a leading centre in the fields of Gravitation, Cosmology and Astrophysics, aggregates more than 60 researchers and students and has an outstanding publication record with a large number of citations.
The research at CENTRA has been classified as Excellent (top mark) by FCT. There were three major considerations in the evaluation: (i) quality, merit, relevance and internationalization of the research, (ii) merit of the team, and (iii) objectives, strategy, plan of activities and organization. In all these, CENTRA got the maximum classification.
IST is the premium engineering, science, and technology school in Portugal, integrating competences from all fields of engineering and fundamental sciences, creating a unique multidisciplinary scientific environment. IST has consistently been the first Institution chosen by Portuguese graduates and undergraduates to pursue their careers in Science, Engineering and Technology. IST hosts the Portuguese largest scientific community in theoretical and experimental physics and related topics, participating in major international organizations such as ESA, ESO and CERN. Presently, IST hosts 8 Research Institutes and 25 Research Centres.
The Institute provides a highly supportive academic and scientific environment giving Ph.D. students and researchers the opportunity to develop a successful international scientific career. Students and researchers that, following their academic experience, opt to follow a business path, can take advantage of the many links that IST has with the industry.
IST is an inclusive and equal opportunity employer that values diversity and is committed to support and encourage applications from women and under-represented minorities.
