The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a multi-mission science and flight operations center for NASA’s flagship observatories. At STScI, we are building innovative calibration software for the processing and analysis of observations from these NASA’s flagship missions in support the astronomical community. We are hiring a Senior Science Software Engineer to join one of the largest open source projects in astronomy working with our Science Calibration Software Team.
Responsibilities include:
In this position, you will be responsible for developing software for processing astronomical data in a fast-paced, multi-mission environment. You will build calibration software capable of precise reductions of astronomical observations and interact with astronomers to deliver innovative solutions to solve cutting-edge astronomical problems.
Developing software for spectroscopic data reductions
Contributing to open source Python packages for scientific analysis
Automating pipeline processing and data quality monitoring
Qualifications:
We prefer a degree in Computer Science, Physics or Astronomy, or a relevant field with a minimum of 5 years software development experience.
You are able to identify problems and implement solutions and offer guidance to development teams and end-users.
Expertise using Python
Experience with open source libraries like NumPy, SciPy, astropy
Familiarity using Git in a team setting
Familiarity with testing tools
Familiarity with spectroscopy and astronomical observation
Strong teamwork, analytical, problem-solving, planning and organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential
This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.
