Job Description

The Galaxy Formation Group, lead by Prof. Andrea V.  Macciò, in the Physics Program of the Division of Science at the New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to appoint multiple Postdoctoral Associates in Spring/Fall 2020. Currently the Galaxy Formation Group consists of three postdocs and three PhD students. The successful candidate(s) are expected to carry out research based on theoretical and/or numerical work in the field galaxy formation and evolution in a cosmological context.

The Galaxy Formation Group is part of the newly established Center for Astro, Particle and Planetary Physics (CAP3, https://nyuad.nyu.edu/en/research/centers-labs-and-projects/center-for-astro--particle-and-planetary-physics.html) at NYUAD. The Center consists of ten faculty members and more than twenty postdocs; moreover, several new fellow positions related to CAP3 have been recently advertised.

Postdocs have direct access to a 30,000 core Infiniband Cluster (Dalma) dedicated to the Science division and to other supercomputer facilities in Europe and USA.  NYUAD is an institutional member of SDSS-IV and MaNGA. Applicants demonstrating familiarity with theoretical and numerical modelling of galaxy formation, and observers/modellers who interact closely with simulations are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field. The appointment will be for an initial period of two years with a likely extension to a total of three years. NYUAD offers a stimulating work environment and provides funds for computing, publications, travel, etc.

The Galaxy Formation Group has close collaborations with the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg (Germany) and the Purple Mountain Observatory in Nanjing (China).

The preferred starting date is Fall 2020, but earlier or later dates are also possible.

Applicants need to submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, publication list and a brief (2-3 pages) statement of research interests, along with arranging for three letters of recommendation.
