Job Description

A Calibration Scientist and a Detector Scientist are required to work on the joint European Space Agency – Chinese Academy of Sciences Solar Magnetospheric Ionospheric Link Explorer (SMILE), which will study the interaction between the Earth’s magnetosphere-ionosphere system and the solar wind. The CEI is part of the SMILE Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) consortium, responsible for testing, modelling and verification of the performance of the CCD used in this instrument.

The Calibration Scientist will be involved in development, test and verification of an X-ray calibration test camera system and associated data capture and data analysis software algorithms and be responsible for developing models, algorithms and test data that will help verify that the CCDs meet the performance required.

The Detector Scientist will be engaged in all aspects of the development and execution of CCD test and radiation damage campaigns including responsibility for the development, test and verification of X-ray event detection algorithms for implementation into the software and the development of data processing algorithms for implementation in the data processing pipeline.

We are also seeking a Project Officer to be engaged in all aspects of the electro-optical and radiation characterisation of the new CMOS sensor for JANUS, a high resolution camera on board the Jupiter Icy moons Explorer mission. This involves detailed electro-optical characterisation of non-irradiated sensors, performing high energy sensor irradiation and evaluating the performance of devices subjected to radiation damage effects, also undertaking modelling of radiation effects.
