Postdoctoral Position in Extragalactic Astronomy

The Institute of Physics and Astronomy of University of Valparaíso (IFA-UV) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in extragalactic astronomy. The successful applicant will work with Dr. Yara Jaffé on the effect of environment on the evolution of galaxies. The project will be carried out in close contact with the IFA-UV extragalactic group, and members of the GASP (Gas Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE) team, based mainly at U. Birmingham and INAF-Padova. A fraction of time will be available for independent research.

We seek a qualified and motivated postdoc with a PhD in Astronomy or related field. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in extragalactic astronomy, and expertise in galaxy clusters, galaxy classification, AGN, large surveys, citizen science and/or integral-field spectroscopy. The position, funded by ESO-Chile joint committee, will be for 2 years, with possibility of extension though external grants.

IFA-UV is located in Valparaíso, a city declared world heritage site by UNESCO. Our fast growing institute is composed of 23 professors, 12 postdocs, and 20 graduate students. While working at IFA-UV, the candidates will qualify as members of the Chilean community with privileged access to 10% of the time on all astronomical observatories in Chile, including ESO/Paranal, Gemini-South, Magellan, CTIO, ALMA and APEX. The salary is the standard scale for postdocs in Chile (20.000.000 CLP/year).
