Job Description

Job Summary

CAD Configuration Systems Engineer/Administrator will report to the TMT Systems Engineering Group Leader and s/he will establish and maintain the master geometry 3D solid model of the observatory by translating and assembling the models for the various subsystems created by partner institutions and contractors. S/he will be responsible for maintaining the baseline configuration of the Observatory, including reviewing design submissions for compliance with requirements and interfaces, and will participate in trade-off studies that support the definition of the observatory architecture. S/he will also maintain the TMT SolidWorks Product Data Management System (SolidWorks PDM). The CAD Configuration Systems Engineer/Administrator will coordinate information exchange of all the 3D modeling activities of the project and maintain project CAD design standards and guidelines. S/he will check mechanical interfaces and clearances. S/he will interact with the Systems Engineering, Adaptive Optics, and Instrument Groups, as well as the Telescope and Facilities Departments, consisting of scientists and engineers responsible for the design, analysis, and implementation of the observatory.

Job Duties

The CAD Configuration Systems Engineer/Administrator will:

  • Maintain the geometric configuration of the observatory, through:
  • Maintenance and configuration control of the Observatory Digital Mock Up
  • Maintenance of the TMT Mass, Center of Gravity, and Mass Moments of Inertia budgets, mechanical interfaces, and space-envelopes for the subsystems and the entire system
  • Develop the Observatory Geometric Architecture by:
  • Performing trade-off studies to determine the best system design to support observatory operations, including observing, maintenance and servicing.
  • Investigate clash/clearance issues within the master geometry model and enforce system wide interface control by reviewing drawings and CAD models against the interface requirements
  • Create 3D engineering models and some 2D engineering drawings, for interface control and fabrication, to support TMT partners and project office engineers

Establish CAD standards across the partnership, including:

  • Act as the liaison with and provide support in the area of CAD modeling for partners and vendors who are developing engineering designs for TMT
  • Review CAD models and drawings delivered to the project for adherence to CAD modeling standards
  • Develop and maintain CAD modeling standards, including templates and master geometry files

Administer the SolidWorks PDM system, including:

  • Converting, merging, and assembling CAD files created by the partners and contractors in various software tools into a master geometry solid model in SolidWorks
  • Provide oversight in the revision control process for all CAD models and drawings as the partners and contractors submit the design in their preferred CAD format
  • Maintain the TMT drawing tree including assigning part and drawing numbers to partners and contractors
  • Create illustrations and animations for presentations and documents

Minimum Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, physics, science, or related field. Candidates with a diploma in mechanical technology will also be considered.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience in combined CAD and PDM software system management, with SolidWorks and EPDM, in a mechanical, aerospace, or similar engineering environment.
  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor and Pro- Engineer is desired.
  • Experience with engineering design, fabrication and assembly
  • Significant experience in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Experience writing engineering documents, including standards
  • The work location is at the TMT project office in Pasadena
  • Some travel will be required to partner, vendor and observatory locations.

Other Desired Experience

  • Experience with design of:
  • optical component mounts
  • high precision mechanical systems
  • large structures
  • Experience with quality control, safety engineering, reliability and maintenance is desired

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Extensive familiarity with advanced 3D modeling and 2D drawing techniques
  • Knowledge of engineering materials
  • Familiarity with fabrication processes and machine shop practices
  • Familiarity with structural steel construction practices would be an asset
  • Extensive knowledge of SolidWorks & familiarity with AutoDesk Inventor, Pro-Engineer
  • Working knowledge of PDMWorks Enterprise
  • Knowledge of software tools for generating illustrations and animations for reviews and reports
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team on a large, distributed instrumentation development project
  • Ability to efficiently organize work and to work independently
  • Ability to speak Japanese and/or Mandarin would be an asset.
