Postdoc position to work on galactic winds with HST
Job Summary
Job Description
TCU is seeking to hire a postdoc to work with Dr. Kat Barger and “The Large Magellanic Cloud’s Galactic Wind through the Eyes of ULLYSES” team to characterize the mechanical feedback from the LMC and its impact on the galaxy’s environment. The postdoc will use observations from the ULLYSES HST program, which will provide UV spectra of 140 massive LMC stars. Our team is combining this data with optical and radio emission-line spectroscopy, radiative transfer models, and hydrodynamical simulations to form a comprehensive campaign to resolve the galactic wind of a single galaxy.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual who works well with others. We are especially interested in applicants who are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environment and welcome applicants from groups that are underrepresented in Astronomy. The postdoc will work closely with all of project leaders, including Drs. Kat Barger (TCU), Andrew Fox (STScI), Elena D’Onghia (U. of Wisconsin-Madison), Nicolas Lehner (Notre Dame), Dhanesh Krishnarao (Colorado College), and Naomi McClure-Griffiths (Australian National U.).
Funding is available for 2 years with the possibility of a 1 year extension depending on performance with a start date of Sep 2022 or earlier upon agreement. The postdoc will have up to 25% of their time to work on their own science. Dr. Barger is a member of the Wisconsin H-alpha Mapper (WHAM) group and TCU is a member of SDSS IV and V and the postdoc will have access to these resources.
Candidates for this position must have a Ph.D. in Astronomy or related field. Experience with spectroscopy, galactic winds, or the interstellar/circumgalactic medium would be beneficial, but is not essential. To apply, provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, 2-3 page statement of research interests and relevant technical expertise, and 3 letters of recommendation. TCU uses an online application protocol administered by Human Resources at https://jobs.tcu.edu/en-us/listing/. Applications will be accepted until January 28th, 2022, but the review process will begin January 14th, 2022.
