Job Description

The Department of Astronomy at the University of Cape Town invites applications for the UCT SARAO South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) Professor in Extragalactic Multi-Wavelength Astronomy. The position will be supported initially for a 5-year term by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) through a generous budget covering postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows, administrative support, plus an operating grant, and is therefore subject to final approval by the NRF.
The focus of the Chair should be on extragalactic HI and multi-wavelength astronomy with emphasis on galaxy formation and evolution, large scale structure (cosmic web) and observational cosmology, through radio observations with MeerKAT and synergies with ground- and/or space-based observations in the optical, infrared and sub-mm domains. The successful applicant should be a dynamic researcher with an international reputation in the above areas, and is expected to take an active role in MeerKAT and SKA science and to build up a research group around the focus area of the chair.
The Department of Astronomy at the University of Cape Town is a fast-growing, dynamic department in the Faculty of Science, with a high international standing for its research output and a leading involvement in numerous MeerKAT and SALT science projects. The department has close collaborations with IDIA (Inter-university Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy), SARAO (South African Radio Astronomy Observatory) and the SAAO (South African Astronomical Observatory).
Requirements: A PhD in astronomy or related discipline; extensive experience in multi-wavelength astronomy; evidence of international standing and research leadership experience; a strong record of supervising postgraduate students at PhD and MSc level; an excellent publication record in high-impact, refereed journals; a track record of obtaining external research funding.
Responsibilities: The Chair will be expected to develop a research group; supervise postgraduate students, including some teaching at postgraduate level.

To apply: please e-mail the below documents in a single pdf file to Ms Natasha Khan, UCT Application Form (download here), a motivation letter, Curriculum Vitae (CV), names and email-adresses of 3 referees, and a separate statement for a 5-year research vision.
