USNO’s Celestial Reference Frame Department is hiring multiple astronomer positions located at both our Washington, DC and Flagstaff, AZ facilities.  Positions include: radio astronomer with a background in very long baseline interferometry and astronomers with a background in solar system or similar ephemerides development.  These positions have a full performance level of GS-12 and are permanent Government appointments.  Opening dates are now through September 20th.  

The specific focus for these positions is in the area of Radio, Visible and Infrared Astronomy, which can include astrometry, photometry, and spectroscopy, though incumbent may be expected to perform work in other areas of the spectrum and with other instrumentation.

Highly qualified candidates will demonstrate a strong ability to perform the following required tasks:

· Participation in the development and execution of astronomical operations

· Process and analyze astronomical data in support of USNO’s CRF mission, which may include development of software and hardware

· Research and development in fields related to the USNO CRF mission area including solar system objects, near Earth objects, stars, stellar remnants, galaxies, and distant objects such as quasars

· Communicating scientific and technical material in both verbal and written formats to a wide range of audiences from astronomy experts and peers to government or international experts

Basic Requirements: Appointments to Federal positions will be made at the GS-11 and GS-12 level, with a full performance at the GS-12 level, and are based on the applicant’s education and experience. Opportunities are available for applicants in the following field:

Astronomer (1330): Degree in one or combination of astronomy, physics, mathematics, or space science. The course work must have included differential and integral calculus and 12 semester hours in astronomy and/or physics.

General and Career Information: Starting salaries are commensurate with education and experience, plus full benefits. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Males born after December 31, 1959 are required to be registered with the Selective Service System. All positions are subject to satisfactory completion of a security investigation, successful completion of a pre-employment physical, and/or drug test.
