Job Description

Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CAMK PAN) announces the competition for the post-doc position.

We are looking for a candidate with practical experience in the modeling of gravitational-wave sources, numerical methods in general relativity and scientific programming.

The winner of the competition will conduct research within the project entitled ''Transient sources of gravitational waves associated with stars neutrons: models and data analysis'' in cooperation with dr. Michal Bejger. Detailed research tasks include astrophysics of transient gravitational waves - models with predictions from elastic and magnetic fields effects, instabilities and accretion, among others numerical relativity simulations for gravitational waveforms from short transient NS phenomena: dynamical collapses induced by the change in the equation of state, and calculations of quasinormal modes from ultra-compact stars. The results will be applied to the observations of LIGO and Virgo detectors.

We seek candidates holding the PhD title in the field of physics or astronomy or a related field (a doctorate degree obtained within 7 years of joining the project) or PhD students at the last stages of their doctoral thesis. The contract should start not later than December 3, 2018 (the candidate should be in possession of the PhD title at this time). The position is available for two years, with a possibility of an extension for the third year.

To apply for admission to the position please attach a copy of the PhD diploma (or the supervisor's statement about the advancement of the PhD thesis), CV, list of scientific publications, two recommendation letters from independent researchers, and a self-presentation statement (concise information on the candidate's previous achievements and experience, and scientific interests: the text should not exceed 3500 characters, including spaces).

Documents should be submitted by October 12, 2018 at the CAMK secretary's office (ul. Bartycka 18, 00-716 Warsaw, tel. 022 3296100) or by e-mail, in the pdf format, to the [email protected]

The contest will be resolved before the end of October 2018.

Additional information can be obtained by e-mail from dr. Michał Bejger ([email protected]).
