The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Alabama invites applications for one postdoctoral researcher to work with Prof. Preethi Nair in the area of galaxy evolution, with a focus on analysis of IFU data from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey as well as on measurements of quantitative morphology to be applied to SDSS-IV MaNGA. The MaNGA dataset will be used to address urgent questions in our understanding of galaxy formation, including the formation history of galactic structures (bulges, disks, bars, spiral arms), and the nature of present-day galaxy growth via merging and secular evolution.
The ideal candidate will have expertise in analysis of optical spectra of galaxies and excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience observing or making direct comparisons between theory and observations and measuring quantitative morphologies would also be beneficial.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in astrophysics or similar field by the date of employment. The position will start no later than September 2017, with earlier dates preferred. The initial appointment will be for two years, with a possible one-year extension dependent on mutual interest and availability of funding.
All applications received by January 1,2017 will be guaranteed full consideration. Applications must be submitted to BOTH:
(1) http://facultyjobs.ua.edu/postings/38770 AND
(2) be emailed directly to [email protected]
The application must consist of a cover letter (addressing how you meet the job requirements), a CV and a statement of past and future research interests. The cover letter must indicate MaNGA in the subject line. In addition, please arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent directly to [email protected] with the subject line: "Postdoc Recommendation for <YOUR NAME HERE>".
The University of Alabama is an Equal Opportunity Affirmative Action Employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
