Job Summary
Job Description
PhD position in stellar physics and asteroseismology
Prof. Dupret and the team ASTA (Theoretical Stellar Astrophysics and Asteroseismology) of the University of Liège (Belgium) invite applications for a PhD position in the field of stellar physics and asteroseismology.
Asteroseismology aims at probing the interior of stars through the analysis of their oscillation spectra. Through this project, the PhD student will plunge into the fascinating world of stellar turbulent hydrodynamics and its interaction with global oscillation modes. Its ambitious goal is to develop the first complete 3D model of the coherent coupling between turbulent convection and oscillations in stars. Once implemented and tested, this new model will be widely used for the first accurate probing of the best current targets of asteroseismology observed from space (with Kepler, TESS and later PLATO) such as solar-like stars, red giants, white dwarfs, …
We seek an excellent student with a strong background in physics, (applied) mathematics and more specifically fluid mechanics, numerical analysis and programming. A master in physics, astrophysics, engineering, mathematics or equivalent is a requirement.
The selected PhD students will be offered a 4-year contract. The salary will be commensurate to the standard scale for PhD grants in Belgium.
Starting of the position: between 1st April and 1st July 2020
The application must include: a CV (including the grades), a motivational letter and letter(s) of recommendation.
