Position overview

The ANU College of Science (CoS) comprises: the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, the Research School of Biology, the Research School of Chemistry, the Research School of Earth Science, the Fenner School of Environment and Society, the Mathematical Sciences Institute, the Research School of Physics and Engineering, and the Centre for the Public Awareness of Science.  Staff and students within the ANU College of Science conduct research and delivers a research-led education program that encompasses the entire breadth of the sciences, supported by extensive international networks and by world-class facilities.  The College has a strong tradition of research excellence that has fostered distinguished Nobel Laureates and Kyoto Prize winners and that trains scientific leaders in disciplines in which the ANU is consistently ranked in the top twenty in the world.

The Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre (AITC) at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) has high-level engineering and scientific teams that develop innovative state-of-the-art instrumentation for astronomy, space applications, laser communications and advanced materials. The AITC is participating in the billion-dollar international Giant Magellan Telescope project, as well as supporting development and upgrades of existing RSAA telescopes and building instruments for international partners. The AITC offers end-to-end professional services and capability for the design, manufacture, integration and test of precision instrumentation and complex systems. The AITC Program requires a high-level engineer to manage highly specialized equipment and space test facilities.

The Opto-Mechanical Engineer / Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer provides specialist technical advice and skills in support of the program in the area of Opto-Mechanical Engineering and will be expected to maintain an up to date knowledge of awareness of state-of-the-art technology in the field and is required to work in a matrix project management structure under the daily direction of the AITC Program Technical Manager and project manager(s).  

Under the broad direction of the Mechanical Engineering Group Lead, the Opto-Mechanical Engineer / Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer provides design, development, validation, and maintenance expertise for approved AITC projects and activities. A close working relationship is required with engineers in Optical, Electronics, Software, Detector and Systems areas. The Opto-Mechanical Engineer /  Senior Opto- Mechanical Engineer will follow AITC technical management procedures to ensure optimum results for complex, multi-disciplinary instrumentation projects, often within the framework of international consortia.
