Job Description

The Institute for Physics of the Universe (IPhU, Aix-Marseille University) invites applications for a PhD position in the field of cosmology. The successful applicant will investigate the phenomenology of dark energy and study the observables of the large-scale structure (galaxy clustering, weak lensing) that can detect possible signatures of modified gravity. The PhD student will develop a unified framework based on the Effective Field Theory of dark energy, which allows the parametrization of a large class of modified gravity and dark energy models. We expect applicants to have a university degree (master or MSc) in physics or astrophysics, be genuinely interested in cosmology, and have skills in theory, statistics, and coding.

IPhU is a leading collaborative scientific research and education environment dedicated to the Physics of the Universe. It brings together and synergizes the theoretical, observational and experimental skills of three laboratories at Aix-Marseille University, internationally recognized in those fields. The PhD student will join the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM) and the Centre de Physique Théorique (CPT), which are both part of IPhU, and work under the supervision of Sylvain de la Torre (LAM) and Julien Bel (CPT). The position is expected to start on the 1st of October 2021 and will be funded for three years with a net salary of about 1420 euros per month.

The applicants should send by email to both Sylvain de la Torre ([email protected]) and Julien Bel ([email protected]): a motivation letter, two reference letters to be sent directly to [email protected] and [email protected], a CV, and university grade transcripts (for all degrees). The deadline for submitting the application material is the 31st of May 2021.
