Assistant Professor Tenure-Track – Big Data Astrophysics

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professorship in the area of big data astrophysics, starting in August 2019. Candidates are expected to have an established record in the area of big data astrophysics such as LSST, Gaia, Kepler, or TESS datasets, machine learning in large scale astronomical surveys, or multi-messenger observations of LIGO sources. The successful candidate is expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and establish a vigorous research program.

LSU is the flagship school of the state of Louisiana with over 30,000 students. The Physics & Astronomy department has over 50 faculty and 100 graduate students. About a third of the professors are engaged in Astrophysics-related research including computational stellar evolution, supernovae, interstellar medium, variable stars, exoplanets, x-ray binaries, neutrinos, gamma rays, cosmic rays, and gravitational waves. Our professors and students use major research facilities around the world including Hubble Space Telescope, Gemini, CTIO, LIGO, Super-K, Auger, and Balloon/ISS instruments. The LSU Center for Computation and Technology has long had a leadership role in high performance computing.

LSU is located in Baton Rouge which is the capital of Louisiana. Baton Rouge is on the banks of the Mississippi River with a population of about 600,000. Baton Rouge and New Orleans (about an hour's drive away) offer a vibrant culture known for its music, food, and, of course, Mardi Gras.

Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. or equivalent degree in physics, astronomy, or a related field.
