The Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences at UC San Diego seeks a postdoctoral scholar to collaborate with Prof. Karin Sandstrom on JWST observations of nearby galaxies.
The successful applicant will play a key role in the “Physics at High Angular Resolution in Nearby Galaxies” (PHANGS) JWST Cycle 1 Treasury program as well as several other Cycle 1 JWST projects, and will be encouraged to lead programs in future Cycles. The applicant will also have the opportunity to participate in the “Spitzer IRS Mapping Legacy Archive” (SIMLA), a NASA funded archival research program focused on Spitzer spectroscopic mapping. They will also have the opportunity to join ongoing projects using the ALMA, the VLA, and the Keck Observatory, and to pursue their own independent research.
Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a closely related field by the start of the appointment. Preference will be made for those candidates with prior experience in infrared observations of galaxies and expertise on interstellar dust. The appointment will be made for one year initially, following UC procedure, with the intention of providing funding for a two year renewal at the end of the first year. Salary will be highly competitive and commensurate with experience. Research and travel funds will be available. The appointment will start in Fall 2022, but can also start sooner if desired.
