Job Description

W. M. Keck Observatory seeks an Electronics Engineer (EE) who will be responsible for the operation, improvement, maintenance and documentation of electronic control systems at the observatory, including motion control, electronic and opto-mechanical control systems for two 10-meter telescopes. Participate in the planning, installation and transition onto operations of newly developed systems.  Competencies required include: hands-on electronic control system skills, experience with troubleshooting, maintenance and optimization of electronic systems, demonstrated ability to plan and execute engineering projects.  Proven ability to use test equipment with the knowledge, skills and abilities to troubleshoot, maintain and improve electronic systems.  

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
  • Five (5) years' related experience.
  • Fundamental understanding of servo motion control using PID parameters.
  • Hands-on skills for troubleshooting and the use of test equipment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Leadership experience.
  • Previous experience in observatory environment.
  • Experiences in areas for controls and automation including; programmable logic controllers, Linux, VME Real Time environment, National Instrument virtual environment, data acquisition and analysis, and basic scripting and programming
  • Familiarity of standard connectors such as MIL-SPEC (MS), D-subminiature, Molex, or equivalents
  • Familiarity with photodetectors and camera based instrumentation.
  • Board level design experience: FPGAs, EPLDs, ADCs, DACs, microprocessors, communication interfaces.
  • Multidisciplinary experience: opto-mechanics, piezo motion, lasers, cryogens.

The observatory operates two of the largest and most scientifically productive optical/infrared telescopes in the world. The twin 10-meter telescopes are located amidst several other world class observatories on the summit of Mauna Kea, at almost 14,000 feet elevation on the Big Island of Hawaii, one of the premier sites for astronomy.
